Choosing a Name Plate That Lasts

Four things account for almost every name plate that disappoints: the wrong material for how exposed the position is, a plate too small to carry its wording, the wrong fixing for the wall surface, and an LED plate wired into a spot with no overhead cover.

Material is the one that matters most, and it comes down to how much shade the plate gets.

House Name Plate Buying Questions

Which material is best for an outdoor name plate?
It depends on how exposed the position is. For a covered porch or recessed entrance, acrylic is ideal and keeps its gloss for years. For an open compound gate, pillar or boundary wall with no shade, choose ACP — it will not warp, absorb water or go brittle in direct sun. In heavy monsoon, coastal or high-sun conditions, take ACP with stud mounting so the wall can dry behind the plate. Many of our designs combine both: an ACP backing board carrying raised acrylic letters.
Should I choose 3 mm or 5 mm acrylic?
3 mm is correct for plates up to roughly 18 inches wide and is lighter and cheaper. Go to 5 mm for anything wider, for plates stud-mounted off an uneven wall, and for exposed gate positions, because an unsupported 3 mm panel can bow slightly over time in heat. For letters, 3 mm raised mirror acrylic is standard and reads sharply at door distance, while 5 mm letters give a deeper shadow on large plates read from the road. On small plates, 5 mm letters look chunky rather than premium.
Acrylic or ACP — what is the actual difference?
Acrylic has deeper gloss, true mirror gold and silver finishes and layered depth, but dulls and becomes brittle under years of direct sun and rain. ACP is an aluminium composite with brushed, matte and wooden finishes that is unaffected by weather, though flatter in appearance. At the same size they often cost the same — our 6×12 inch mirror acrylic plate and our custom walnut ACP plate are both ₹1,499, so ACP is not the budget compromise people expect. Acrylic suits doors and porches; ACP suits gates, pillars and boundary walls.
What size name plate do I need?
It is not decided by whether you live in a flat or a villa — apartment walls often take large plates and villa doors sometimes suit small ones. Work through three things. First, measure the width of the door panel, or the wall beside it, which is your limit. Second, check the wording fits: a single house name works from about 12 inches wide, a name plus house number from about 16 inches, a family name with two to four member names from about 20 inches, and a name with number and address line from about 22 inches. Third, allow roughly one inch of letter height for every ten feet of viewing distance — that is what usually pushes a gate plate larger than a door plate. Send a photo with a rough measurement and we will lay it out to fit.
Stud mounting or 3M tape — which should I choose?
It is decided by the wall surface. 3M tape suits clean, smooth, dry surfaces such as flat doors, glass, laminate, polished granite, tiles and smooth interior paint, and is ideal for rented flats where drilling is not allowed. It will not hold on textured exterior paint, rough plaster, raw compound walls, or anywhere that gets wet. Stud mounting holds the plate slightly clear of the wall and is the correct choice for all outdoor plates, rough walls and heavier designs, because the gap lets water drain and the wall dry behind. Note that ACP is only ever stud, stand-off or screw mounted — tape is not an option on it.
How is an LED name plate wired, and is it waterproof?
An LED strip runs in a concealed channel behind the letters or panel and feeds to a driver that steps mains down to low voltage, so the plate needs a power point behind or near it. Keep the driver indoors wherever possible — damp is what kills drivers first. The plates are water-resistant, not submersible, and are built for positions with some overhead cover such as a porch, recessed entrance or eave. In a fully open position taking direct monsoon rain, water eventually reaches the driver or cable entry. If your spot has no cover, we will say so and suggest either shifting it under the eave or using a non-lit ACP plate with a separate spot light.
What LED colour should I pick?
Warm white, cool white and RGB are all available. Warm white is the right default for a home — it flatters wood, brass and gold mirror finishes and reads as light rather than signage. Cool white suits modern white and grey elevations and appears brighter at the same wattage. RGB is popular for festivals but is rarely what people leave running every night. Most customers wire the plate to the existing porch light switch; ask for a photosensor or timer if you want it to run dusk to dawn automatically.
Can I get the name plate in my language?
Yes. Hindi, English, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Marathi, Bengali, Gujarati and Punjabi are all available, either on their own or bilingually on the same plate. Indic scripts break easily if conjuncts and matras are mishandled, so send the wording typed exactly as you want it and check it character by character on the mockup before approving.

Yes. Every order includes a free digital mockup showing the exact layout, spelling, font, colour and size, and nothing is cut until you approve it. Send your name, preferred language, entrance photo and rough measurement on WhatsApp to start — there is no payment needed to see your design.
How long does it take?
Standard plates typically ship in 3 to 5 working days from design approval. Larger custom, LED and fully bespoke plates take around 7 to 10 working days, plus transit anywhere in India.
