Choosing a Roof Border for Clay Tile Homes: PVC vs Wood vs GI Sheet

The decorative fascia that runs along the lower edge of a sloping clay tile roof goes by several names — roof border, barge board, fascia trim, roof frill. In Kerala and coastal Karnataka it is one of the most visible details on a traditional house, and it is also the part most likely to have rotted, rusted or sagged within a decade.

Why wooden barge boards fail at the roof edge specifically

The roof edge is the worst position in the building for timber. Water runs off the tiles directly onto it, wind drives rain against the face, and the end grain at each joint sits exposed. Paint holds for a while, then a fixing hole or a shrinkage crack lets water into the end grain.

Once the ends soften, the board sags between rafters, which opens the joints further and accelerates everything. Most replacement enquiries we receive are not about appearance — the board has physically dropped.

Why the pattern repeat matters

A roof border is a repeating decorative profile running many metres. Two things determine whether it looks right:

• The repeat lands cleanly at corners and ends. A pattern that stops mid-motif at a corner is the most common visible mistake. We set out the repeat against your measured run before cutting.
• The drop depth suits the roof height. A shallow border disappears on a tall elevation; a deep one overwhelms a low porch.

Measuring for a roof border

Measure the total running length along each roof edge that needs covering, including both slopes if the border wraps. Note any corners, and whether the border must return around a gable. Send the measurements and a photo of the roof edge, and we will confirm the repeat and the drop before quoting.

Common questions

Can PVC roof border replace an existing wooden one directly?

Usually yes. It fixes to the same rafter ends or fascia. Because it is much lighter, sagging rafter ends are less likely to be stressed further, though badly rotted rafter ends should be repaired first — a new border will not fix a failing structure behind it.

Will it survive the monsoon?

PVC foam board does not absorb water, rot or rust, which is precisely why it is used at this position. Fixing spacing matters more than the material: too few fixings on a long span is the one way to get a problem.

Can it be painted to match my roof?

Yes. It is supplied white as standard and takes paint well. Many customers paint it to match the tile colour or the trim on the rest of the elevation.

Does it come in the traditional Kerala patterns?

We produce several traditional repeating profiles — spiral, fleur, scallop, lotus leaf, oval drop and others — as well as custom patterns from a drawing or a photograph of an existing border.

How long does it take?

Dispatch is 2-3 working days after design approval, and Saturday counts as a working day here. Roof borders travel by VRL Logistics rather than air courier, so allow roughly 3-4 days in transit to Kerala and coastal Karnataka and longer to North India. Long runs may need to be split into sections for transport, and shipping is charged separately.
